For the Raiders’ roster before to training camp, an experienced free agent might be the best choice.
The 2024 Las Vegas Raiders have several positive characteristics in their roster. This is particularly valid when playing defence. But before the 2024 training camp, it would be beneficial if the Raiders signed a free-agent cornerback to round out the squad.
Adoree Jackson, the former cornerback for the New York Giants, is the player they should be focusing on. Although he is not a Pro Bowl calibre player, the 5-foot-11, 185-pound player would be a welcome addition to the Raiders’ squad.
Jack Jones and Nate Hobbs are the current starters, with Jakorian Bennett and Brandon Facyson providing depth. Jackson does well in comparison to that group.
What benefits may CB Adoree Jackson offer the Raiders?
Jackson has a relationship with Patrick Graham, the defensive coordinator of the Raiders, who oversaw the Giants’ defence while Jackson was a member of the squad. This kind of information may be extremely helpful to a team’s defence during the season, both for Jackson and Graham regarding the scheme.
The Raiders’ position wasn’t improved by cornerback Amik Robertson’s departure due to free agency. Robertson, who joined the Lions, appeared to be developing into a promising NFL player in Las Vegas during the previous season.
Robertson wasn’t very hard to replace by the Raiders. Jackson makes sense to sign a modest one-year contract for a variety of reasons. It might serve as a safety net for Jones, Hobbs, Facyson, and Jakorian Bennett in particular.
And if there’s any doubt about the value of depth at the cornerback position in the AFC West, just say the names of Patrick Mahomes and Justin Herbert. Yes, Raiders’ defensive backs will be quite busy for at least four of their division-rival games.
Jackson isn’t a world-beater. He doesn’t get high marks from Pro Football Focus, 48.6 overall and only 45.6 in coverage. And he has only four interceptions in seven years.
However, he is physical enough to be a factor in the run game. PFF rated him at 59.9 in run defense. And he had 50-plus tackles in each of this three seasons with the Giants. He totaled 63 last season for his best mark since his first two years in the league. Also, his 14 games played was his highest total since 2018.
The Raiders are reportedly high on fourth-round pick Decamerion Richardson. And why shouldn’t they be? Richardson is a 6-foot-2, 188-pound burner. He ran a 4.34 in the 40 at the NFL combine.
However, Richardson’s weak coverage is the reason he survived till the fourth round. Jackson had a 4.42 mark in the 40 when he first joined the team, but he has covered receivers competently enough to earn a job in this position for seven years. Maybe Jackson could mentor Richardson and teach him some of the subtleties of the games. And perhaps one day the Raiders will appear outstanding for finding a steal similar to Richardson.
Richardson is now buried at number three on the depth chart, so at least it appears like the Raiders aren’t prepared to take a chance on him based only on his quickness.
Jackson is still capable of making excellent boundary snaps. Additionally, he can provide depth as a backup slot defender if needed. Thissas City or the Jim Harbaugh-led Chargers in 2024. But if they are going to make noise, veterans will likely be a key reason why.
