Martin Dubravka to Celtic – “This one is accelerating now”

Martin Dubravka has once again been linked with Celtic as the search for Joe Hart’s successor drags on. And there looks to be a tractor in this one coming from reliable Newcastle United fan media, implying that Dubravka may be on his way to Celtic soon.

In recent weeks, the Slovakian international has been strongly linked with a move to the club by a number of credible sources down south. Things may become clearer now that Slovakia has been eliminated from Euro 2024 after losing narrowly to England in the last 16 match yesterday evening, with Dubravka in goal.

I believe there is some substance to these assertions. Dubravka, 35, is a seasoned goalkeeper who is at ease, if not brilliant, with the ball at his feet, which is something Brendan values in goalkeepers. With him being surplus to requirements at Newcastle United, it makes perfect sense, and I wouldn’t be surprised if he starts next season as our new number one.

It’s unlikely to delight any Celtic fans, and I understand their position. We all want to spend some decent money on a new custodian. Preferably a younger one with some pedigree, but I can see why adding someone like Dubravka makes sense given his experience and talent.

Based on his performances at Euro 2024, he appears to be a decent, dependable custodian who will not find it difficult to play for Celtic, as opposed to Vasilis Barkas, who cost Celtic £4.5 million from AEK Athens.

Dubravka has EPL experience and a wealth of foreign experience. Yes, he is 35 years old, but he still has a few years to live. He wouldn’t be the worst acquisition, and it’s better than starting next season with Scott Bain in goal.

There is a Newcastle United social media account that appears to be trustworthy, and it claims that Dubravka is headed to Celtic. Mouth of the Tyne, which has 42.5k followers and touts itself as being about all the latest NUFC news, debate/opinion, transfer rumours…run by a fan FOR the fans, mentioned it yesterday night and has a new update today.

Here’s what they had to say on Sunday evening: ‘Last bit of info from me tonight. Told that Celtic have firmed up contact with #NUFC regarding Dubravka. Player keen on move but won’t entertain discussions until after the Euros….fully focused on Sunday’s game. He 100% wants out of the Club this summer.’ And today’s update: ‘The Ruddy agreement undoubtedly means that Dubravka is now nailed on to transfer.

A couple of days ago, the word I got was that he was likely signing for Celtic as soon as the Euros were done. Slovakia departed the competition last night, so perhaps this one is picking up now.’

Could Celtic be poised to announce the signing of Martin Dubravka? We need to know sooner rather than later. Just an ordinary boy.
