Juventus and Aston Villa triple deal, real costs and questions

The cost of Douglas Luiz for Juventus is now covered by the sale of Samuel Iling-Junior and Enzo Barrenechea to Aston Villa, however there are still unanswered problems.

Juventus must provide extremely comprehensive financial data of all moves because they are listed on the stock exchange.

The Bianconeri have announced in a number of statements over the past two days that Douglas Luiz signed a €50 million contract with Aston Villa.

Juventus also sold Barrenechea for €8 million plus up to €3 million in bonuses, and Iling-Junior for €14 million plus up to €3 million in bonuses.

Calcio e Finanza note that the sale of the two players has a positive impact of €20.1m on the balance sheet ending June 30, 2025, when amortisation, salaries, and profit margin are taken into account.

Given that Douglas Luiz’s salary and purchase fee are estimated to be €5 million per season net, they will add up to €19.25 million on the same balance sheet, thereby canceling each other out.

Juventus and Aston Villa balance the books

These are “separate and distinct transactions, both contractually and substantively,” as the statements take great care to note.

Juventus is using extra caution when determining “fair value,” as evidenced by the note that focuses on the “interpretative uncertainties regarding the application of IAS 38.”

This was partly expected considering that they lost points in 2022–2023 due to the controversy involving “artificially inflated” transfer values used to balance the books, and they also had to replace their whole board of directors.

They are waiting until February 2025 to create the balance sheet in order to hedge their bets.

The rationale behind the announcement of the transactions on different days is that Aston Villa needed to complete the sale by June 30 in order to comply with Financial Fair Play regulations in the English language, but it would have been more advantageous for them to complete the signings in the July 1 fiscal year.
