Dan Ashworth saga finally looks set to come to an end after almost five months – David Ornstein

Dan Ashworth finally looks to be on his way to Manchester United after spending almost five months tending his garden since telling Newcastle United he wanted to leave.

Dan Ashworth, Newcastle’s sports director, was rumored to be leaving for the Manchester Reds ever since Sir Jim Ratcliffe became a shareholder at Manchester United.

After considerable backstamming (including sending his deceitful email to his NUFC account, what an idiot), he eventually plucked up the guts to tell Newcastle. He was promptly put on gardening leave while the two teams worked out a settlement.

Ashworth’s contract was reportedly being demanded by Newcastle for between £15 and £20 million, while Manchester United was proposing three packs of panini stickers and a 10p mix-up, or something similar.

PSR now looks to have been a factor

Both teams have shown no signs of giving up, and although the Magpies have largely remained silent, Mr. Ratcliffe has not; he took time after the London Marathon to poke fun at Newcastle and most recently sobbed to Bloomberg about us as well.

But at last, it seems like something is happening, as The Athletic reports that the relocation has received approval.

Although no price has been disclosed as of yet, it appears that the PSR shortfall gap has been addressed, which is what has made the trade possible, given that Newcastle was active in the transfer market yesterday.

Newcastle are yet to appoint a successor to Ashworth

We won’t get to witness Ashworth’s outcome in his arbitration case against the club because he is scheduled to start his new role immediately. All in all, probably best for him.

Newcastle is yet to name Ashworth’s replacement after Dougie Freedman, their first candidate, chose to remain at Crystal Palace.

In order to prevent another day like yesterday, when we had to sell two promising possibilities who we otherwise would not have sold, let’s hope the club gets someone in soon.
