The gifted academy head who might get his first significant opportunity at Celtic during preseason

As the new season draws closer, Celtic supporters will be closely monitoring any announcements regarding fresh additions to the starting lineup.

The club is already down four players from when the season finished, as a result of Brendan Rodgers losing Joe Hart to retirement and Sead Haksabanovic to Malmo. Additionally, Adam Idah and Paulo Bernardo have returned to their loan clubs.

Although there is no reason to panic, the recruitment department still has to work on strengthening the squad in preparation for the upcoming season.

Rodgers shouldn’t overlook what is right in front of him, even though the Celtics management is searching for guys who are ready for the starting lineup.

We recently discussed five Celtic B team youngsters who should be drafted into the Hoops first-team squad for next season.

Rocco Vata, Daniel Kelly, Buson Lawal, Mitchel Frame and Matthew Anderson are all highly rated at the club and could have a good future at Celtic ahead of them.

But there is another youngster who has already tasted success as captain at youth level who could also be drafted into the Celtic first-team squad.

Kyle Ure

Kyle Ure, a young player, signed a new contract with Celtic in the summer of 2022 after the club used the off-season to tie up ten academy kids to new contracts. The previous season, Ure captained Celtic to the 2023 Scottish Youth Cup victory over Rangers after an amazing 6-5 extra-time win over their Glasgow rivals. Since then, the 18-year-old has made 38 appearances for the Celtic B team, helping the young Hoops to sixth place in the Lowland League. He also made six appearances for Celtic in the UEFA U19 Youth League last season, helping the club to win and draw against Lazio.

Seven times captained by Scotland’s U17 team, Ure played in all three of Scotland’s matches in the U17 Euro 2023 tournament last summer. Near the end of the 2023 season, he impressed Player Pathway Manager Darren O’Dea by stepping up to the Celtic B team amid an injury crisis. Now that Celtic has scheduled pre-season friendlies against Queens Park and Scott Brown’s Ayr United, this could be the ideal time for the young midfielder to be given his chance to step up again with a first-team opportunity this summer. Since Celtic’s international contingent won’t be available for selection, Rodgers is likely to call up fringe players and youngsters. This could be a big moment for Ure.
