Rangers suffer a fresh financial setback – sources

According to Football Insider journalist and Scottish specialist Daniel Bowers, who was speaking on Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Rangers will be financially at the mercy of Scottish Rugby Union {SRU) if the team is forced to utilise Murrayfield for fixtures in 2024–2025.

Given that Rangers will host a preseason friendly against Manchester United at Murrayfield in Edinburgh on July 20, it is highly likely that the team will play at least a few of its competitive games there in 2024–2025.

But if a deal had to be made with the Gers, given the club’s dire circumstances, this might be viewed as a pay day for Scottish Rugby Union.

The relaying of the playing field after summer concerts has left Hampden Park, another alternative that has been suggested, out of commission for at least the first few weeks of the new season.

In addition, Queens Park, whose nearby smaller facility is unavailable, is compelled to use the stadium.

Rangers may have to fork over significant cash for Murrayfield

Rangers are now essentially at the mercy of any stadium owners as the season edges closer.

Bowers claims the inevitable solution may have to be to bite the bullet with SRU and use Murrayfield until the “shambles” is dealt with in renovating Ibrox.

The former chief of Aberdeen, Keith Wyness, exclusively told Football Insider [27 June] that Rangers cannot even rule out spending the entire 2024–25 season at Murrayfield, with material shipping delays from Asia distorting the whole timescale of the redevelopment plans. Wyness labelled the home of Scottish Rugby as the “only sensible option” amid the chaos regarding Ibrox, with supporters fast losing patience with the club and its partners. The details of how Rangers could go about striking a deal are currently unknown, but time is running out. The Scottish Premiership fixtures were announced earlier this week, and Champions League qualifiers are next.
