Anthony Elanga, a former Manchester United forward, is being courted by Newcastle United to join Nottingham Forest.

In addition to receiving praise for their efforts to strengthen Erik ten Hag’s backroom staff by signing René Hake and Ruud van Nistelrooy, INEOS made a huge statement of intent when they restructured Manchester United’s football administration by appointing Omar Berrada and Jason Wilcox. However, the new co-owners at Old Trafford are finding it difficult to demonstrate the same level of ambition when it comes to signing new players, as United’s transfer budget is constrained by the Premier League’s profitability and sustainability rules (PSR).

However, they are not the only Premier League club who are struggling this summer due to the regulations. Interestingly, the same predicament may end up giving a little boost to United’s financial concerns.

Last year, the Red Devils parted ways with their academy graduate Anthony Elanga, who moved to Nottingham Forest for a reported initial fee of £15 million. United also added plenty of add-ons in the deal as well as a sell-on clause, as per The Mirror.

The 22-year-old versatile winger enjoyed a promising season at Forest, scoring five goals and assisting nine times in the Premier League. This has led to interest from Newcastle United.

The Magpies are actively trying to sell their promising forward Yankuba Minteh before June 30 in the midst of their own issues with the PSR.

The Telegraph claims that Newcastle wants to move Minteh in the other direction and sign Elanga from Nottingham.

The article continues, “Over the last 24 hours, the talks between the two clubs have intensified.”

Both Newcastle’s PSR compliance and United’s financial situation may be enhanced by the rumoured sell-on clause in the purported swap contract, which should be honoured based on Elanga’s value even in the event of a player exchange.

However, United might have to sell additional youth players, like Mason Greenwood, in order to make truly bold summer purchases.

The homegrown forward has drawn interest recently from France, Italy, and Spain. He spent the previous season on loan at Getafe.
