Tottenham end pursuit of England U21 star, as Southampton open talks

Spurs give up on the England U21 player, as Southampton begins negotiations.

Ronnie Edwards was associated with the Spurs.

It has long been known that Tottenham is interested in Ronnie Edwards of Peterborough. Over the previous few years, the 21-year-old has drawn interest from a number of major clubs.

Following an academy scouting of Edwards and his few appearances for the senior team, Football Insider revealed back in September 2021, following Nuno Espírito Santo’s appointment as manager, that Spurs had “set their sights” on the player.

Nearly a year later, The Daily Mail said that Spurs were still interested in Peterborough’s young player, Edwards, and that the team was “taking note of Edwards.”

Months later, Football Insider even asserted that Peterborough was “prepared for proposals from Spurs and other clubs’, with 2022 seemingly being the height of Tottenham’s interest, although it’s unclear as to whether a bid was ever made.

In “pole position” to sign Ronnie Edwards are the recently promoted Saints.

Due to their victory in the financially rewarding play-off final, which will have given them more money to work with this summer, Russel Martin’s Southampton are expected to have the “financial flex to prise Edwards from London Road,” according to Pete O’Rourke of Football Insider on Thursday, July 27, 24.

Spurs have chosen to “not pursue their interest any further at this stage,” despite the report confirming that Edwards is still regarded in “high regard” by the team’s personnel. This leaves Southampton free to attempt to negotiate a deal for the defender.

Since joining the team at the age of 17 in 2020 from Barnet’s academy, the Posh defender has made an amazing 142 senior appearances for the team (TransferMarkt).

However, it appears as though the south-coast side will look for further defensive improvements with Joe Rodon being mooted as a potential signing as part of a swap deal involving striker Carlos Alcaraz. (Daily Mail)

Spurs Web Opinion

If Edwards wasn’t a talented player with enormous potential, he wouldn’t have been playing for the England U21s for such a long time. Still, it seems more likely that a move to Southampton will further his development than likely receiving extra minutes at Tottenham.

The acquisition of the Peterborough kid would have blocked the way for Ashley Phillips and Alfie Dorrington, two future defensive standouts for Spurs. Edwards may have suited a transfer to Tottenham in past seasons, but that ship may have flown by now.
