To relieve Newcastle’s PSR woes, Minteh will receive a Brighton medical prior to a £33 million signing.

The Gambian’s action follows reports that Newcastle made contact with Liverpool on the possibility of selling Anthony Gordon.

Yankuba Minteh will see Brighton tomorrow morning for a physical after Newcastle struck a solution to alleviate their urgent Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR) difficulties that was valued at more than £30 million.

I said on Friday night that Brighton was getting close to a deal for Minteh, and after a strange day in which it was also reported Newcastle had contacted Liverpool to suggest a potential move for Anthony Gordon, a fee of £33 million with no buy-back was agreed upon.

These negotiations broke down, despite Newcastle’s constant optimism that they would find a buyer for Minteh, the 19-year-old Gambia winger, who would solve their PSR issues.

The club were understood to be risking a breach and potential points deduction without sales. Everton were hit with a ten point punishment last season, although it was later reduced to six.

After his loan stint at Feyenoord, as I revealed on Friday, Brighton’s transfer analytics recognised him as one of the most productive and potential right wingers in European football last season. They think his worth might likely surpass the £33 million they have committed to pay.

A medical appointment is scheduled on Sunday at 11 a.m. on the south coast, which means a deal will be completed well in advance of the June 30 “soft” PSR deadline, which marks the conclusion of the Premier League clubs’ accounting year.

The deal should go a long way towards meeting Newcastle’s PSR criteria, but because the regulations are unclear and there is only one Premier League, it’s unclear if other transactions are necessary to prevent a possible violation.

The Magpies have regularly discussed the need to move players, but they haven’t said much about their PSR position in recent weeks.
The England U21 defender Jarell Quansah was reportedly included in the planned Gordon deal that Liverpool received, which turned the Reds away. Still, they are fans of Gordon.

The Magpies’ management is left scratching their heads in light of that and Newcastle’s hasty attempt to adhere to PSR regulations, which Darren Eales claimed they would never break in January.

Ironically, once the accounting period reopens in July, they will have more money to spend because several deals are being worked on. The team and Nottingham Forest have discussed the possibility of trading Elliot Anderson and winger Anthony Elanga, but neither party seems to be convinced by that arrangement.
