Though it wouldn’t have been shocking to see his contract extended by a another year given that he was a member of 22 league matchday teams in 2023–2024, the Clarets have decided to let him go.

Johann Berg Gudmundsson

To be fair, the Icelandic winger managed to play in 26 league games during the previous season, tallying three assists and one goal.

Even though he started several of those games as a substitute, the fact that he was able to get any playing time would have given him hope that Turf Moor would offer him a new contract.

Now that he is 33, though, it appears that the Clarets are eager to put their attention towards the future. That indicates that the winger will be leaving with 227 games played, 14 goals, and 30 assists.

The decision to release him might have also been influenced by his pay; according to Capology, he made £35,000 a week during the 2023–2024 campaign.
