Sunderland legend makes Newcastle United observation that Gareth Southgate will hate

Legend from Sunderland says something about Newcastle United that Gareth Southgate will not like.

When facing their final 16 opponents, Jermain Defoe has asked England to release Anthony Gordon, Cole Palmer, and Kobbie Mainoo.

Until the results of Groups E and F are known today, the Netherlands appear to be the most likely opponent on Sunday. That would put the Three Lions, who faltered through the group stage, to a harder test.

Gareth Southgate is starting to come under increasing criticism after yet another clumsy performance at Euro 2024. Slovenia held England to a score of 0-0 in Cologne, allowing England to win their group but with little conviction.

Gordon, a winger for  Newcastle United only saw two minutes of action total before stoppage time began, but in those moments, he tore apart the Slovenian defense. Sunderland great Defoe supported the Toon talisman to start in the forthcoming round of 16 match, speaking to PA.

“There has to be an identity, but people have talked about the team not moving enough and being too dynamic,” he remarked. “If you look at the players we have, especially in the attacking areas, we are an extremely talented team.

“Yes, we’re qualified, but everyone was more interested in the performance than anything else. Playing against these passive squads is challenging. The ball must be moved rapidly, and you must seize your opportunities when they present themselves.

“I believe Mainoo will join the team for the upcoming match.” He is a forward-thinking person. Additionally, I thought Cole Palmer had an impact. Based on his performance throughout his Chelsea season, he is a creative player who can make things happen.

“And Gordon, with his quick stride. He knocked the ball past the defender as soon as he entered the game. Although the ball did run out of play, this just slightly disadvantages the opposing team. Though we have several choices, it will be intriguing to see if Gareth makes use of these players.
