Aston Villa have signed Netherlands defender Ian Maatsen from Premier League rivals Chelsea
Ian Maatsen, a defender from the Netherlands, has joined Aston Villa from Premier League opponent Chelsea, the team announced on their website on Friday. A number of British media reports stated that Maatsen had transferred to Villa in a deal of 37.5 million pounds ($47.4 million, 44.3 million euros), albeit no money was disclosed. While on loan at Stamford Bridge, the 22-year-old left-back was a part of the Borussia Dortmund team that lost 2-0 to Real Madrid in the Champions League final at Wembley earlier this month.
He was brought into the squad to replace injured Barcelona star Frenkie de Jong, and is presently playing for the Netherlands in Euro 2024 in Germany.
After forward Lewis Dobbin joined from Everton during the preseason transfer window, Maatsen is the second player that Villa boss Unai Emery signed.
After placing fourth in the Premier League the previous season, Villa is currently getting ready for Champions League football.
Maatsen played for Dortmund in 16 league games and seven Champions League games. He scored in the German team’s victory over Atletico Madrid in the European quarterfinals.
After being loaned to three English teams—Charlton, Coventry, and Burnley—he also played in 12 Premier League games for Chelsea the previous season.
