In an effort to assemble a club that can contend for promotion the next year, Watford will be engaged in a flurry of transfer activity this summer.

After an impressive interim tenure, Tom Cleverley has been named manager on a permanent basis.

The 34-year-old’s goal is to raise the team’s dismal 15th place result from the previous season.

The Hornets’ first team roster has a chance to be strengthened during the summer window in order to contend for a top six finish in 2025.

In an effort to assemble a club that can contend for promotion the next year, Watford will be engaged in a flurry of transfer activity this summer.

Tom Cleverley has been appointed as manager on a permanent basis following a successful interim stint in charge.

The 34-year-old will be aiming to improve on the club’s disappointing 15th place finish in the previous campaign.

The summer window represents an opportunity to strengthen the Hornets’ first team squad, with a view to fighting for a top six finish in 2025.Watford will be back in the Championship for the third time, therefore they will be concentrating on fighting to go back to the Premier League.

They will, however, have fierce competition as several clubs are vying for a spot in the play-offs.

Here, we examine two wise additions Watford should make this summer to increase their chances of finishing in the top six.

Two shrewd signings Watford should make in 2024
Player Current Club Age
Rocco Vata Celtic 19
Declan Frith Valencia 22

Rocco Vata

Due to his contract expiring this summer, Vata’s future at Celtic is in doubt.

The 19-year-old has gained recognition as a very promising young player after passing through the academy of the Scottish powerhouses.

Although the young player has previously been recognised internationally for Ireland at the U21 level, he has failed to get into Brendan Rodgers’ starting lineup this season, making just one league appearance (all stats courtesy of Fbref).

The Hornets are reportedly considering a summer move for the teenager, but teams like Palermo might present a challenge.

If they can convince him to relocate to Vicarage Road, this would still be a very cheap deal to get over the line, even if Celtic will still be entitled compensation due to his age.

Along with players like Ryan Andrews, Vata would be an intriguing new addition to this Watford team, giving them another offensive option.

Given that the former midfielder will want to focus on developing the team’s youth, Cleverley may be the manager to assist the right winger in realising his goal of getting game time.

Vata may not yet be a full, and if he breaks through into the Watford starting lineup iny developed first team player, but his potential is very exciting the coming years, his worth might soar.

This would be one for the future in a lot of ways, but it would still be a shrewd addition given the likely low cost of the deal.

Declan Frith

Another promising young player that might be available this summer at a reasonable price is Declan Frith.

The Valencia B player has been linked to Watford, and the 22-year-old is also being watched by QPR.

Valencia is anticipated to be open to accepting a small fee in exchange for the ability to regularly play for a top team, but a substantial sell-on clause will also need to be approved as part of the agreement.

In order to prepare for the future, Watford should consider purchasing the young player as well.
