The camp of Bayern Munich centre back Matthijs de Ligt has begun negotiations with Manchester United on a summer transfer, as reported by journalists Kerry Hau and Florian Plettenberg of Sky Sports Germany.
Manager Erik ten Hag is eager to strengthen his defensive ranks after a lacklustre campaign, which is why the Red Devils are serious about bringing the Netherlands international to Old Trafford ahead of the upcoming campaign.
Man United has not yet gotten in touch with the Bundesliga team, but if a good deal is made, De Ligt departing this summer is not out of the question.
The Red Devils have learned more about the 24-year-old in recent days, and he seems amenable to rejoining his former manager Ten Hag.
De Ligt needs regular playing time because he was dropped from Bayern’s starting lineup, and there’s no assurances that Vincent Kompany, the new manager, will bring him back.
Under Ten Hag’s guidance, the Dutchman rose to prominence at Ajax, and in 2019, former Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho described him as “very intelligent” and “fantastic.”
Since then, he has developed into a reliable player, and if a deal happens this summer, he will be confident in his ability to establish himself as a vital member of the Red Devils’ lineup.
Given his age and current market worth, De Ligt also fits the description of the kind of addition Sir Jim Ratcliffe, the co-owner of Man United, wants the team to make in the summer.
Transfermarkt values him at approximately €65 million, but the Red Devils are willing to spend €50 million for his talents, and Bayern may be open to a deal for that amount or a little more.
