Archie Gray release clause emerges at Leeds United as Brentford close in on summer transfer

As he approaches a move to Brentford, Archie Grey has a release clause in his Leeds United contract that expires on Sunday, June 30, according to talkSPORT.

The publication said on its website on Saturday, June 29th, that the Bees’ offer is expected to increase to £40 million with add-ons, which is reportedly more than the clause in his Elland Road contract.

In an attempt to close the deal as soon as possible, Brentford decided to pay more than this provision and made the adaptable midfielder an offer of a £75,000-a-week contract.

In an attempt to prevent a late hijack with many players, Brentford is set to have Grey finish a physical with Thomas Frank’s squad on Saturday.

Does Archie Gray’s Leeds United contract contain a release clause?

It is interesting that this release clause in Gray’s current Leeds United contract has only now come to light after the Whites accepted a bid for the midfielder and it begs the question, just what was the value of it?

If it is lower than the £40million including add-ons that Brentford are set to pay, surely the Whites ran the risk of losing one of their most prized assets for a cut-price fee after they missed out on promotion back to the Premier League.

In any case, it doesn’t appear like it will hurt Daniel Farke’s team this season because Grey might not even be a Leeds player when it expires and the Bees have already completely waived the provision.

Losing one of their best players so early in the window is devastating for the team and its supporters, but the Whites are hoping that this large-scale transaction will enable them to hold onto players like Illan Mesiler and Crysencio Summerville.

However, fans will put increasing pressure on the club’s executives if more well-known players leave.
