One of the individuals with connections to the organization who was recognized as a recipient of the Pro Football Hall of Fame ‘Awards of Excellence’ on Thursday in Canton, Ohio, was Bob McCartney, the longtime video director for the Steelers and current director of facilities.
Having worked with the Steelers for 51 seasons, McCartney’s first-ever game on camera was the legendary 1972 playoff match between the Steelers and Oakland Raiders, in which Franco Harris made the “Immaculate Reception.”
Being one of the NFL’s most skilled videographers, he has since recorded and videotaped hundreds of games.
McCartney declared, “There’s no doubt that it’s truly special.” “Knowing that my name will join the likes of Terry Bradshaw, Lynn Swann, Jack Lambert, and, of course, Joe Greene in the Hall of Fame.” I chuckle because I videotaped all those men and it’s not like they’re going to put a bust up there, but it’s still quite amazing to know that my name will be in the Hall of Fame forever.”
former backup wide receivers In addition, former Steelers media relations director Dan Edwards, who left the team in 1985 and went on to play 29 years for the Jacksonville Jaguars, Dave Levy, who began his career in video production with the team, and coach Lionel Taylor, who led the team to two Super Bowl championships during his tenure with the team from 1970 to 1976, were recognized.
“Bob McCartney has been an integral part of the Steelers organization for more than 50 years, dating back to one of the greatest moments in NFL history, the Immaculate Reception, which was the first game he filmed for us,” said Art Rooney II, the president of the Steelers. “In addition to his on-field contributions, he has benefited the organization off-field in his current role. His contributions have helped the team achieve success.”
As a crucial member of our coaching staff during Super Bowl IX and X winning teams, Lionel Taylor aided in the early development of Hall of Fame receivers John Stallworth and Lynn Swann.
“It’s wonderful that they, along with Dan Edwards and Dave Levy, who were also affiliated with the company, are being honored by the Pro Football Hall of Fame for their extensive service in the NFL.
The Awards of Excellence, which were established in 2022 to recognize individuals in five categories that support the team’s performance, are in their third year. Assistant coaches, athletic trainers, directors of films and videos, managers of equipment, and public relations staff are among them. The first group to receive the “Awards of Excellence” in 2022 included former Steelers public relations director Joe Gordon and equipment manager Tony Parisi; the 2023 group included former assistant coach Tom Moore.
McCartney is pleased that the film/video directors have been added to the group; they were not included in the original group in 2022.
“I think it’s really important that this event has kind of taken wings,” said McCartney. “You look at pro football and it is about the players. But there’s so much more that goes on behind the scenes that the population doesn’t realize. This started to recognize people that are behind the scenes. I think it’s extremely important that the Hall of Fame came to the conclusion themselves that there are people other than the players and the coaches that are involved in pro football and make it work.
