Burnley stalwart days away from becoming free agent amid Southampton links

Burnley stalwart Charlie Taylor is a couple of days away from becoming a free agent.

The left-back’s current contract is set to expire on June 30, which might mean the end of his seven-year tenure at Turf Moor.

At the end of the season, the Clarets extended new deals to both Taylor and Jay Rodriguez; however, only the latter has accepted as of yet.

The left-back’s current contract is set to expire on June 30, which might mean the end of his seven-year tenure at Turf Moor.

The Clarets offered Jay Rodriguez and Taylor new contracts at the end of the previous campaign, but only Rodriguez has accepted as of yet.

Jack Cork and Johann Gudmundsson, two mainstays from the team from the previous season, have both left, meaning the club has already lost a significant amount of experience.

This implies that the Clarets will have lost a total of 1,288 career appearances across the trio should Taylor decide to seek pastures new.

The necessity for another full-back on that side of the defence would only grow if Taylor leaves Burnley, who have been searching for a new left-back for some time.

The 30-year-old first made the move to East Lancashire in 2017 following his departure from Leeds United.

The 22-year-old made his senior debut in the 2020–21 season after rising through the ranks of PSV’s academy.

Before making 14 appearances for PSV the previous season, the Netherlands Under-21 international played 36 times while on loan at Sparta Rotterdam during the 2022–2023 season.
