Sunderland learn Carabao Cup first-round opponents with fans set for another away trip

The Carabao Cup first round matchup between Sunderland and Preston North End will take place at Deepdale.

On Thursday morning, the Northern and Southern parts of the draw were used to determine the Black Cats’ opponents for the first round of the cup tournament.

The first-round matches will take place in the week starting on August 12, in between Sunderland’s opening Championship games on the road against Cardiff City on August 10 and at home against Sheffield Wednesday on August 17.

The 13 current Premier League teams not participating in European competition, including Newcastle United, its local rivals, Luton Town and Burnley, who were both demoted from the Premier League last season, will also play in the competition in the second round.

The following teams will enter the competition in the third round: Manchester United, Tottenham, Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool, Aston Villa, and Manchester City. Under Tony Mowbray, Sunderland was eliminated in the competition’s opening round, falling to Crewe Alexandra on penalties following a 1-1 draw at the Stadium of Light.
