Report: Aston Villa submit first £30m proposal to sign “superb” Copa America star for Emery

In addition to pursuing Ian Maatsen, Aston Villa has made a bid for Unai Emery’s next signing, a current Copa America standout.

Aston Villa transfer news

The Villans have already had a busy summer, with Douglas Luiz apparently on his way to Juventus in a deal that will see Samuel Iling-Junior and Enzo Barrenechea leave, according to Fabrizio Romano. The Brazilian will surely be missed, but Barrenechea’s arrival, in particular, should help find a replacement for Emery.

It’s a vital summer for Villa, who hope to build on their stunning Champions League qualification with further upsets on the big stage next season. Of course, losing Luiz is not a good start, but links to one specific Copa America hero could be a portent of things to come.

Aston Villa and Tottenham Hotspur have proposed signing Yan Couto from Manchester City for €35 million (£30 million) this summer, according to Spanish publications. Last season, the right-back played on loan at Girona and helped them qualify for the Champions League, comparable to Villa’s surprise Premier League top four finish.

Couto’s future may not be resolved until the end of the Copa America with Brazil, at which point Villa may pick up their pursuit of competition or a successor for Matty Cash. However, it is unclear whether Manchester City will sell to a top-four opponent.

“Superb” Couto can compete with Cash

Couto may join Maatsen, providing Emery with two new full-backs to compete with Lucas Digne and Matty Cash. The latter may face the same battle as his teammate, as Villa seeks to secure the squad depth required to compete on all fronts in the coming season. Couto, at 22 years old, is more than capable of assuming Cash’s place.

Goals 1 2
Assists 8 2
Tackles Won 34 31
Ball Recoveries 153 110

Couto created more than Cash last season, and his arrival would only help Ollie Watkins even more next season, while preserving Cash’s defensive brilliance.

During his time in Spain, the Brazilian right-back has gained many fans, including Jacek Kulig of Football Talent Scout, who characterised him as a “superb talent” on X.

With their initial approach apparently made, Villa must now wait to see if Manchester City is willing to trade its young right-back this summer.
