Philippe Clement under ‘Massive Pressure’ to deliver at Rangers as sack verdict emerges

Philippe Clement will be under “massive pressure” at Rangers this season to deliver results on the pitch, according to Kris Boyd.

After taking over at Ibrox in October 2023 to succeed Michael Beale, Clement won the Scottish League Cup. However, although initially narrowing a significant deficit, Clement lost both the title and the Scottish Cup final to Celtic, their bitter rivals.

With four agreements already signed and moves for Hamza Igamane and Liam Kelly on the horizon, the Belgian is now hoping to add his own mark to the team this summer. However, Boyd acknowledged to Sky Sports on June 27 that he is under pressure to perform well on the pitch.

“Philippe Clement has performed admirably on the pitch,” he remarked. “He doesn’t need another headache—he’s going to be under a lot of pressure to perform for the Rangers this season.”

Since Steven Gerrard left Ibrox the managerial appointments have been less than impressive, but Clement must change that.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst started well but couldn’t overcome Celtic despite his Europa League run and was rightly sacked, before the club made an emotional decision to move for Michael Beale which backfired too.

Although Clement has so far shown that he is superior to both of them, he still has issues defeating Celtic, and he must now find a means to overcome them in order to avoid joining the ranks of their predecessors.

His job has undoubtedly become harder without Ibrox accessible for the first month of the season, but he would argue that this isn’t a justification for not winning football games.
