Former Newcastle midfielder now considering retirement after cardiac arrest

Former Newcastle United midfielder Nabil Bentaleb is considering retiring from football after a recent hospitalisation.

After it was revealed last week that he had been taken to the hospital, the 29-year-old, who made 12 appearances while on loan at Newcastle from Schalke 04, is thinking of hanging up his boots.

According to reports that have surfaced today, Bentaleb—who is better known for his stint at Tottenham Hotspur—had a heart arrest.

I’ve always found it puzzling that while Bentaleb and other young, physically fit individuals might suffer cardiac arrest, I, at forty-two and in the poorest shape of everyone I know, am still alive. Not quite, but it’s ticking.

Things didn’t work out for Bentaleb at Newcastle

Bentaleb joined Newcastle on loan from Schalke in January 2020 as part of a deal that included a buyout option.

After making 12 appearances, though, it was evident that Newcastle was not interested in the former Spurs player. The Algerian international left for Germany and was then traded to Angers and Lille, where he is still playing today.

We can understand why Newcastle believed Bentaleb could repeat his success in a return to the Premier League, given his potential at Spurs, but it was not to be.

We wish Nabil Bentaleb all the best and a quick recovery

Having to consider retirement at the age of 29 must be difficult, especially in light of players like Christian Eriksen, who virtually died on the field while playing for Denmark, who are still playing for Manchester United in the Premier League and representing their nation in important competitions.

With any luck, they’ll be able to determine whether or not his heart is strong enough to carry on and allow him to pursue his professional goals. Seeing a player have to quit a game early is never good.

We hope to see Nabil Bentaleb back in action soon and wish him a full and swift recovery.
