Aston Villa hatch £30m Man City transfer plan for shock Champions League qualifier

The latest Aston Villa transfer news as Spanish media say Unai Emery and Co are willing to go up against a Champions League rival for a Manchester City defender

Yan Couto of Girona FC looks on

With Aston Villa being identified as one of the interested parties, Manchester City may have to make a major choice this summer over the future of right-back Yan Couto.

In order to prepare the team for a season in which it will simultaneously compete in the domestic and Champions League, Unai Emery is now enhancing some members of his roster. One position on the team the manager has highlighted seems to be full-back, beginning with the upcoming £37.5 million purchase of Ian Maatsen from Chelsea.

With the addition of the 22-year-old, the left side of defense will be covered for years to come, but what about the other side?As soon as the summer transfer market opened, Matty Cash was mentioned as a possible departure, and now a successor for Cash has been suggested.

The team is vying directly with Tottenham Hotspur to recruit Couto from Premier League rivals Man City, according to fichajes.net. The 22-year-old, who joined the champions from Coritiba in 2020, has not played in a league game in England since he has spent three of the last four seasons on loan at La Liga team Girona because to the champions’ multi-club ownership structure.

Thus, the Under-17 World Cup winner has spent most of his professional career in Spain, where he has made 95 appearances for his Catalan loan club. In that time, he has established a reputation as a rampaging right-back, tallying five goals and dishing out 17 assists, ten of which came last year as Girona qualified for the Champions League the following season.

Although it’s been reported that he wants to stay in La Liga, Man City hasn’t yet decided what to do with the player beyond the summer. Furthermore, Girona is said to be unable to pay the defender’s €25 million (£21.1 million) asking fee.

If Villa and Spurs decide to pursue their rumored interest, Pep Guardiola and company will have a dilemma. According to reports, both teams would make offers for Couto as high as €35 million (£29.6 million). This raises the question of whether City should sell to a direct Premier League competitor or turn down a sizable offer for that reason.

Douglas Luiz, the leaving midfielder for Villa, and Couto are presently playing for Brazil in the Copa America. He did not play in their first group stage match, a 0-0 tie against Costa Rica. Any decision on his future should be expected after the tournament.
