To prevent the Everton star from “getting teased,” Jordan Pickford’s father “changed his name.”

Everton’s Jordan Pickford is one of England’s most experienced goalkeepers heading into Euro 2024.

Had Jordan Pickford’s father not altered his surname through deed poll when he was a kid, Jordan’s Everton shirt might have had a different last name.

If his father’s youth had gone in a little different direction, Pickford’s name would have sounded different—Jordan Pigford, as in the Everton goalkeeper’s moniker. Up in the North East, classmates had initially given his father Lee a less than flattering nickname.

According to the Express, Pickford’s father decided early on to change his name by deed poll, replacing the ‘ck’ with a ‘g’, to avoid the ‘piggy’ taunts from his contemporaries. The goalie has always had the support of his family, and while looking back on Pickford’s career in 2018, his grandfather couldn’t contain his pride.

In 2018, he told the Daily Mail, “I’m over the moon for him, I am.” “I never imagined he would be an England player. Moving to Everton was a wise move for him, and it is the best thing he did after leaving Sunderland.”

“I’m happy for him; he’s doing well. He’s a large boy, standing six feet four, but he keeps to himself. He makes no boasts or anything. He is the same person as always when he gets home. Really, he’s a quiet child. I consider him to be the world.”

On Thursday night, Pickford made his 21st appearance at a major tournament as Denmark held England to a 1-1 draw. The former Sunderland player now has more games played by an England goalkeeper than Peter Shilton (20), thanks to the appearance.
