There are plans for Aston Villa to sign a second “marquee” player.

According to insiders who spoke to Football Insider, Aston Villa boss Unai Emery would “love” to sign a big name to take Douglas Luiz’s spot in the middle.

In an interview with Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, senior writer Pete O’Rourke disclosed that as the Brazil international gets closer to joining Juventus, Villa will be considering alternatives to replace his vacuum.

On June 12, Football Insider originally reported that the West Midlands powerhouses and Juventus were in early negotiations over a trade for Luiz, 26, that would involve Weston McKennie, 25, and Samuel Iling-Junior, 20.

The Italian powerhouses have decided to include 23-year-old Enzo Barrenechea in the deal rather than his midfield counterpart, after negotiations with McKennie fell down.

Luiz is now anticipated to finalize his move to the Serie A team, and Villa is expected

to obtain the two players as well as £20 million in cash as part of the deal.
Aston Villa is looking to replace Douglas Luiz with new players.

Due to his fantastic season at Villa Park, Luiz has drawn serious interest from a number of elite clubs in recent months.

In 53 games during the season, the Brazilian scored 10 goals and provided 10 assists, helping Villa to a fourth-place Premier League result.

Barrenechea’s transfer to Villa Park is guaranteed by the Juventus deal, but Emery now wants to bring in another prominent midfield player to replace Luiz.

Ross Barkley from Luton Town has already signed with Villa after it was exclusively revealed by Football Insider on May 18 that the team had begun negotiations with the midfield player. On May 25, the club announced that a “full agreement” was in place for Barkley’s signature.

However, given the club’s financial circumstances, it is likely that money will determine whether or not any more modifications in the middle of the park can be made.

Villa has to generate £60 million in player sales this summer to prevent possibly losing points the next season, according to information obtained by Football Insider earlier this month.

In other news, following “shock,” Aston Villa was instructed to terminate the Douglas Luiz contract.
