The ridiculously cheap striker who could become Brighton’s next sell-on superstar

Brighton have been linked with a bid for a rising Spanish star – is he ready to step up to the Premier League?

It doesn’t take long for Brighton & Hove Albion to be associated with another young talent who is destined to be selected from Europe’s lower leagues and guided towards the Seagulls’ first squad. Spanish reports suggest that David Mella of Deportivo de la Coruña could be the next player they want to target.

The 19-year-old forward, who has also played for Spain at the Under-17 and Under-19 levels, made his debut in the starting lineup for the second-tier team this season and quickly made an impression. Over the course of 34 games, he scored nine goals in the league and the Copa del Rey and picked up three assists. Is he prepared for the Premier League, though?

Left-footed but equally at ease on either wing, Mella possesses many of the traits Brighton looks for in their wide forwards: he is quick, has deft footwork, the guts to take on opponents, and presses fiercely, frequently forcing turnovers in hazardous situations. It comes as no surprise that Sport Witness has seen several reports in the Spanish media that suggest Brighton may make a summer bid.

There are doubts about his decision-making, as there are with many young wingers who make their professional debuts at this point in their careers. He frequently tries to play a killer ball when it’s not really on or takes a chance trying to dribble past a defender when a simple pass would be sufficient, but he makes up for it with confidence and daring. He immediately reminds me of Alejandro Garnacho of Manchester United because of his sudden burst of acceleration, his eagerness to run with the ball and shoot from all angles, and (most recently) his shock of dyed blonde hair.

As of right now, there is no solid evidence of an offer being made, therefore this is only rumour. But one imagines that we’ll find out how much truth there is to the reports very soon, given the deadline effectively enforced by his soon-to-shift release clause.

The Seagulls already have some strong wide forward options in Mitoma, Facundo Bunonanotte, and Simon Adingra. However, if new manager Fabian Hürzeler wants to stick with the 3-4-3 formation that he has preferred thus far in his career, then some extra depth across the front three may be necessary. Mella could provide that depth because he is a player with the courage to take on opponents and beat them as well as a quick burst of speed and impressive technique. He appears to be a natural impact sub, at worst. At best, he might have a very high ceiling if he can work out how he makes decisions and refrain from frequently biting off more than he can chew.
