Reports from Sky Sports in Italy say Roma are now interested in ‘incredible’ £25m Newcastle winger

While there are a few Newcastle United players attracting notice this summer, most of them—like Bruno Guimaraes and Alexander Isak—are players we wouldn’t plan to transfer.

However, there is one player whose name keeps coming up in connection with a potential transfer that supporters won’t want to see go but whom the team may still be able to profit from.

Yankuba Minteh is a hot commodity this summer despite never having touched a ball for Newcastle, not even in training. He has already been connected to a return to Feyenoord as well as a transfer to Liverpool.

Gianluca DiMarizio, a journalist for Sky Sports Italy, has now suggested that Minteh is a target for Roma and that the Magpies have set an asking price of €30 million (£25 million).

advanced with Everton’s interest, DiMarzio asserts that Marseille is ‘far advanced’ in negotiations with the Gambia international.

FFP could be the deciding factor in Minteh’s future

The question of whether Newcastle would consider bids for a player who appears to be highly potential ultimately boils down to how desperate they are in regards to the dreaded FFP/PSR.

No one can disagree that selling him for £25 million would be a brilliant financial move, especially considering that he only signed for approximately £6 million last year (varying sources place the amount between £5 and £7 million).

But given how swiftly he progressed at Feyenoord last season—from a quick winger with what the team CEO called “incredible speed” and little finished product to one of Arne Slot’s first names on the team sheet—we can’t help but question whether it was the right decision to let him go before he even had a chance to compete in the Premier League.

Newcastle would be better off hanging on to Minteh – his potential is too good

Right-wingers aren’t exactly in abundance at Newcastle right now—in fact, strengthening that position is a top priority this summer—but what if the solution is already available?

Although it would be unrealistic to expect Minteh to be able to step up to a regular first-team role this coming season, it is still a good idea to bring in a winger this summer. Federico Chiesa is an experienced option, and Minteh would have a top player to learn from and eventually take over from.

Moreover, consider how much he might be worth in a few years if we hold onto him and help him improve if he is already reportedly valued £25 million after just one season in the Dutch Eredivisie. If we do it well, it’s not like we’d want to sell it anyway. Simply hold onto him.
