In the win over the Canadians, Emiliano Martínez, the goalkeeper for Aston Villa, made two saves. The Argentine defense and the seasoned goalie stopped Jesse Marsch and his team’s seven shots in total.
After the triumph, Martínez expressed his disapproval of the playing conditions for both sides, stating that using artificial turf at Mercedes-Benz Stadium devalues the competition and brings it down to a level that will not be seen at UEFA Euro 2024.
Eight World Cup games, including one semifinal, will take place in the stadium in 2026. Following Saturday’s Major League Soccer match, which was held on the stadium’s customary artificial turf, the grass was installed.
Lionel Scaloni, the manager of Argentina, supported his players’ comments about the playing conditions.
“I’m glad we prevailed,” Scaloni exclaimed. If not, it would have been a flimsy justification. They altered the surface a few days ago and knew seven months in advance that we would be performing here. This wasn’t a good field, but that’s hardly an excuse. The field is not suitable for these athletes, I sincerely say.
Argentina will play Chile in their second Copa América match on Tuesday at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. It will be fascinating to see if Martínez will continue to be vociferous about this problem or if the pitch conditions meet his requirements.
