Adam Wharton was an unused substitute for England against Denmark on Thursday night, but now there are calls for him to start.
With three Selhurst Park players on the pitch on Thursday night, Crystal Palace fans will have witnessed the most exciting match of the Euros to date.
Both Marc Guehi and Joachim Andersen made their national debuts, with Andersen’s red-clad performance garnering praise from the Danish press.
Additionally, Ebere Eze made an appearance from the bench and engaged Andersen in a fascinating exchange in the 89th minute.
However, to the bewilderment of Palace supporters, Gareth Southgate once again benched Adam Wharton. Craig Dawson has now clarified why Wharton ought to start.

Following the match, Craig Dawson was on Sky Sports on Friday morning to talk about England’s subpar performance. During his remarks, he urged Southgate to make one change for the match against Slovenia.
“I think Trent has been made too easy to blame; he’s not a midfield player. However, we anticipated having more possession and spending a lot more time in the opposition half than we did in the first two games. Really, I don’t see him performing on Tuesday night again.

Dropping the £180k-a-week right-back would be a favourable move which it seems most of the country would now agree with.
How England should line up vs Slovenia
It will all come down to the last match day against Slovenia because England isn’t assured to advance after messing up the lead against Denmark.
For England, a victory is crucial because if they come second in their group, they will play Germany in the next round.
In light of this, Gareth Southgate needs to make some adjustments. The only one that immediately comes to mind is switching Trent for Wharton in the middle of the midfield.
This is improbable, though, given Southgate’s obsession with Conor Gallagher despite the player’s last two subpar performances.
