“A complete number 9”: Josh Sargent of Norwich City is expected to be replaced by a Tottenham and Denmark player.

This article is part of Football League World’s ‘The Verdict‘ series, which provides personal opinions from the FLW writers regarding the latest breaking news, teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…

Josh Sargent, a striker for Norwich City, is expected to be a target for several teams this summer. A number of elite teams are interested in the USMNT player.

Following Norwich’s unsuccessful effort at promotion, Darren Witcoop has stated that Sargent will be moving this summer. Meanwhile, a report from The Sunday Mirror (19/5/2024, p70) stated that Leeds United is one of several clubs interested in the striker.

The source adds that a number of other teams, including the Premier League’s Bournemouth, Brentford, and Fulham, are vying for the 24-year-old’s signing. Although Brentford and Wolverhampton Wanderers have both been linked to a bid for him recently, and following the Canaries’ failure to advance above the second division, a number of teams

Daniel Farke signed the forward for the Canaries for £8 million from Werder Bremen in August 2021 and the striker has developed well in the second tier since then. He netted 16 goals in 30 appearances in all competitions last season and enjoyed the best goal-scoring form of his career so far under now ex-boss David Wagner, despite an ankle injury earlier in the season that ruled him out for four months.

Josh Sargent expected to leave Norwich City

Sargent is expected to move on this summer after Norwich lost out in the play-off semi-finals to Leeds, and a player of his quality will require replacing by the Canaries for 2024/25.

Here, we ask our FLW writers their verdict on who should fill his boots for next season.

Adam Elliott

Sargent has improved as a player over his two Championship campaigns, therefore it will probably take an eight-figure offer—possibly as much as £15–20 million—to persuade the Canaries to let go of their standout striker this summer.

Even though Sargent would be essential to a possible promotion push next season, it is not realistic for him to stay at this point. However, if they can utilise that money to acquire a few big names, it would be worth it.

Even while the recruitment team might need to take a few risks, such a fee could help find a respectable successor at the second tier level.

People will point to Parrott’s poor form at second tier level during those previous loan spells (scoring just three goals in 43 games), but the Irishman has enjoyed a very successful 2023/24 season, and deserves another chance in the second tier.

The final solution was to try his luck abroad and this turned out to be the best decision of his career to date. This season he has scored 10 goals in 18 league starts for Dutch club Excelsior on loan from Spurs and looks to finally be finding regular goals, albeit in the Netherlands.

Troy Parrott’s senior career so far (all comps) – per Transfermarkt
Team Year(s) Games Goals Assists
Tottenham Hotspur 2019- 4 0 0
Millwall (Loan) 2020-2021 14 0 1
Ipswich Town (Loan) 2021 18 2 0
MK Dons (Loan) 2021-2022 47 10 7
Preston North End (Loan) 2022-2023 34 4 0
Excelsior (Loan) 2023-2024 32 17 5
Republic of Ireland 2019- 23 5 2

It’s been a real coming of age for a player that is surely now Championship ready, and primed to break out at last. Excelsior is where the 22-year-old has shown his star potential.

In addition, he may be available for a reasonable fee because he just has one year left on his Spurs contract. Norwich should be interested in him this summer.
As athletic, high-intensity hitters, it’s simple to see how Sargent and Parrott are comparable. Both players go in behind the action and work the channels, and if the Irishman reaches more of his early promise, he might erupt similarly to Sargent.

If they decide to go after his signature, they will definitely have competition from other Championship teams, so it would be a coup for Johannes Hoff Thorup and company if they could sign him as their primary striker before the start of the following campaign.
