Tottenham to agree add-ons for £50m+ signing as personal terms verbally accepted

Tottenham will aim to agree a series of add-ons to secure a deal for Brentford striker Ivan Toney, which may cost between £50-55 million, according to Alan Hutton.

According to Football Transfers (18 June), Spurs have verbally accepted personal terms with the England striker, who has one year left on his contract with the Bees.

The article also stated that there is still some work to be done on valuation, with Spurs rejecting a £40 million proposal and Brentford holding out for £65 million, with a figure somewhere in the middle regarded to be sufficient to complete the transaction.

Former Tottenham Hotspur defender Hutton believes this is a reasonable fee for a guy who can enhance Ange Postecoglou’s starting lineup.

“I think that’s a good number, I understand Tottenham, I know how they work, they go in low, Brentford go high and you meet somewhere in the middle, that’s what happens in every move in football,” said the manager.

“If they can get around the £50-55 million level, I mean he’s 28, I know he had a poor end to the season when he came back from his ban – I think he only scored three or four goals in 17 games – but we know what he’s capable of because of what happened before, and he’ll learn from it.

“If they can get in the building, there may even be some add-ons if he goes on to score ‘X’ number of goals in the Champions League or for England, or whatever, to help bulk out the money.

“But I think that’s a good number, he’ll make the difference for them if scores 20-plus goals a season, which with the supply he’s going to get I think he will, he could be the difference maker.”

Will Tottenham sign Brentford ace Ivan Toney?

Tottenham still lacks a typical centre-forward after selling Harry Kane to Bayern Munich last summer.

Captain Son Heung-min and Richarlison alternated going up top throughout the year, but neither is in the mould of Kane.

Toney would undoubtedly qualify as a “proper” striker; the only problem is that he will face stiff competition for his signature.

Tottenham Hotspur Stadium

A move to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium could be on the cards for Ivan Toney.

Spurs are expected to be among the bidders, and if Levy, despite his flaws, can negotiate a good deal for the striker, the deal is likely to be completed.

Toney would likely welcome the opportunity to join a team like Spurs at this point in his career.
