Along with left defender Ian Maatsen, Aston Villa is also trying to recruit a “outstanding” player.
Chelsea full-back Maatsen is expected to sign with Aston Villa NSWE and Monchi look to be getting close to making their first major summer acquisition.
The 22-year-old played for Borussia Dortmund on loan during the previous season, and he helped the team reach the Champions League final. The Bundesliga’s biggest clubs missed out on the opportunity to acquire the Netherlands international for an estimated £35 million.
Villa has moved in, agreeing to pay a little bit more than the £35 million amount and securing personal conditions for a six-year contract at Villa Park.
It’s thought that Maatsen, who appears destined to compete with Lucas Digne and Alex Moreno for a regular starting position, has found playing Champions League football with Unai Emery’s team to be alluring.
Following Maatsen, there will probably be further additions. Ross Barkley’s long-term arrival is anticipated to be revealed next month, and Villa may still acquire some Juventus players in exchange for Douglas Luiz.
Jhon Duran has been strongly linked to Chelsea in addition to Luiz’s departure, while Tim Iroegbunam, a young midfielder, is expected to sign with Everton. But in retaliation, Villa is trying to sign a young Toffee player.
Aston Villa offers for Lewis Dobbin.
Aston Villa has also made an offer to sign Lewis Dobbin from Everton, according to Sky Sports, who has been reporting on Maatsen’s impending move to the Midlands for the past 48 hours.
Although the value of an offer for the striker is unknown, transactions for Iroegbunam and Dobbin should benefit Villa and Everton in terms of PSR.
Dobbin, a 21-year-old, appeared in 12 Premier League games last year and netted one goal. The attacker made more than 50 senior appearances for the Rams during his loan season with Derby County in 2022–2023.
During that period, Dobbs received commendation from manager Paul Warne, who stated: “I have no problem with players making mistakes; it’s all about having the courage to keep trying, which is what Dobbs did.”
Like all the players, he did some really excellent things, some really bad things, and some really fantastic things. It was a strong header, though. Although headers aren’t one of his strongest skills, it makes him feel amazing to score his first league goal of that kind and have it be the winning goal.
Should a transfer proceed, it will be intriguing to watch how Emery uses Dobbin in the long run because he can play as a left winger, right winger, striker, second striker, or offensive midfielder.
