Tottenham commit to ‘further education for all players’ after Rodrigo Bentancur’s alleged racist joke about team-mate Son Heung-Min

After an alleged racist comment regarding teammate Son Heung-Min by Rodrigo Bentancur, Tottenham has promised to further educate all of its players.

In a TV interview, Bentancur made a racially offensive remark regarding his teammate, Son. The club is reaffirming its commitment to creating an inclusive and courteous workplace by taking action to guarantee that such situations do not occur again.

The dispute started when Bentancur made a comment regarding Son while participating in the Uruguayan TV program “Por La Camiseta” prior to the Copa America. The Uruguayan international made a joke about his South Korean teammate, saying, “They all look the same.” Bentancur had to publicly apologize after receiving negative feedback on his remark very soon.

“Sonny brother, I apologise to you for what happened; it was just a very bad joke,” the Uruguayan posted on Instagram. You are aware of my affection for you, and I promise never to treat you badly or injure anyone else. Brother, you have my affection.”

In response to Bentancur’s apologies, Son behaved gracefully. Son acknowledged and accepted the apologies in a social media post, writing, “I’ve spoken with Lolo. He acknowledged his error and extended his apology. I would never mean to say anything hurtful, lol. We are brothers, and not a single thing has changed. We’re over this, we’re a team, and we’re going to get back together in the preseason to fight as one for our club.”

Son responded graciously to Bentancur’s apology. In a social media post, Son expressed his understanding and acceptance of the apology and wrote: “I’ve spoken with Lolo. He made a mistake, he knows this and apologized. Lolo would not mean to ever say something offensive. We are brothers and nothing has changed at all. We’re past this, we’re united, and we will be back together in pre-season to fight for our club as one.”

Tottenham is going to respond by providing additional instructional programs for every player. The club’s diversity, equality, and inclusion goals are in line with these programs, which aim to foster tolerance and understanding for people from all backgrounds and cultures.

“The Club has been providing assistance in ensuring a positive outcome on the matter following a comment made by Rodrigo Bentancur in an interview video clip and the player’s subsequent public apology,” the statement said. As part of our diversity, equality, and inclusion goals, all participants will receive additional education in this regard. We wholeheartedly agree with Sonny’s assessment that he can move past the situation and the team can concentrate on the next new season. We take great pride in the diversified, international fan base and playing squads we have. Any form of discrimination is not acceptable at our club, in our game, or in larger society.”

Tottenham is excited for the upcoming season after accepting the apology and putting procedures in place to train the team. The club intends to move past this tragedy and use it as a teaching moment to uphold its inclusiveness and respect ideals. Positive progress will depend on the team’s dedication to these ideals and the strengthening of the relationship between Bentancur and Son.
