Sunderland may have one manager coming back into contention very soon, after the latest development at Burnley.
As we approach the 2024–2025 season, both Sunderland and Burnley are without a manager.
After being relegated from the Premier League, Burnley will play in the second tier alongside Sunderland the following season.
Nevertheless, early this summer, former Clarets manager Vincent Kompany would leave Turf Moor to take a position at Bayern Munich.
In contrast, Sunderland has been without a manager for over four months with the dismissal of Michael Beale in February of this year.
Before he dropped out of the race and quickly secured the position at RC Lens, it appeared as though the Black Cats had a stand-in in Will Still.
Then it appeared as though Liam Rosenior was being approached by Sunderland; he would also withdraw from the race, preferring to go after the Burnley position.

Rosenior led the Tigers to a 7th-place Championship finish, but Hull City fired him at the end of the previous year.
Although Burnley, Sunderland, and Plymouth Argyle have all been linked to him, it appears that the Clarets are interested in former Manchester United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy.
According to reports from the Netherlands, van Nistelrooy, the manager of PSV until May 2023, is almost certain to become the new manager at Turf Moor.
Rosenior would then be without a club. However, it is obvious that the former full-back is eager to manage again and that he wants to do so in the Championship.
However, should Rosenior lose out on the Burnley position, Sunderland needs to prevent a return for him.
Sunderland must avoid Michael Beale repeat with Liam Rosenior
Rosenior has a number of qualities that might make him stand out from Beale, including his friendly and affable personality and his championship experience.
The biggest shortcoming of Beale’s tenure as Sunderland manager was that the fans never warmed up to him, either as a coach or as a person. Some of his remarks in the press furthered this divide.
Furthermore, Rosenior’s decision to leave Sunderland in order to pursue a seemingly greater and bigger opportunity will simply widen the gulf between Black Cats supporters and the management. Rosenior may return to Sunderland after missing out on Burnley.
Rosenior’s comeback into the picture doesn’t seem completely implausible, as Sunderland’s sporting director Kristjaan Speakman and owner Kyril Louis-Dreyfus are undoubtedly growing more and more desperate in their managerial hunt.
If that were to occur, though, Sunderland supporters might lose all residual dignity and respect for club authorities.
Additionally, there would be a hint of bitterness towards Rosenior, which might put him behind the curve from the beginning.
Sunderland can prevent a Beale-recursion by preventing Rosenior from returning if he is not selected for the Burnley position.
