Son Heung-min and Tottenham break silence on Rodrigo Bentancur’s offensive comment

In response to the Uruguayan’s offensive remarks made during an interview ahead of the Copa America, the captain of Tottenham Hotspur and the club have spoken out. Son Heung-min says he has spoken with Rodrigo Bentancur and that the two Tottenham players are “past this, we’re united.” The Uruguayan made an offensive comment during an interview about his captain and Korean people. During the televised interview ahead of the Copa America, the Spurs midfielder attempted to make light of the situation when a reporter asked for a shirt from one of his teammates. Bentancur responded, “Sonny?” to which Bentancur asked, “Or any other champion?”

“Or any cousin of Sonny, they all look more or less the same,” Bentancur retorted. The reporter answered, “Yes, of course!!”

Kick It Out, an organisation that works to end racism and discrimination in sport, said on Wednesday that it had received a significant number of reports regarding Rodrigo Bentancur’s remarks about his Tottenham team-mate Son Heung-min. The comment caused offence both inside and outside of the Korean community, with many viewing it as racist. The club and the appropriate authorities have already received these reports. Although Bentancur has admitted to causing offence, this only serves to draw attention to a larger problem that significantly impacts East Asian and other cultures. Bentancur had earlier in the week apologised to the Spurs captain in an Instagram story, saying: “Sony (sic) brother! I apologise to you for what happened, it was just a very bad joke! You know what I love you and I would never disrespect you or hurt you or anyone else! I love you brother!”

In an Instagram Story post on Thursday, Son addressed the issue and offered his own response, stating: “I’ve spoken with Lolo.” He has apologised and acknowledged that he made a mistake. I would never purposely say anything offensive, lol. We are brothers, and not a single thing has changed.

“We’ve moved over this, we’re a team, and we’ll get back together in the off-season to defend our team as a whole. Sonny.

In a further statement, Spurs said: “The club has been assisting in securing a positive result on the subject following a comment made by Rodrigo Bentancur in an interview video clip and the player’s subsequent public apologies. All participants will receive additional instruction in keeping with our values of equality and diversity.
