Kristjaan Speakman could now miss out on ‘terrific’ Sunderland target to Bristol City

Sunderland could now miss out on one of their ‘terrific’ targets to their Championship rivals.

After finding it difficult to generate opportunities the previous season, Sunderland is keen to inject some originality into their senior team this summer.

The Black Cats, who relied primarily on Jack Clarke to score goals, had one of the lowest goal totals outside of the relegation zone.

The winger, though, is now expected to depart Wearside this summer, and they don’t appear to have a successor in place.

They want to add some talent to their midfield, but they also need to bring in some wide players.

After leaving Sunderland, Alex Pritchard and Amad Diallo have not yet been replaced; Jobe Bellingham frequently fills the no. 9 position.

Burnley midfielder Scott Twine, who scored six goals and gave three assists while on loan last season, is being linked by the Sun to the Championship team.

Twine, who left MK Dons in 2022 after contributing a staggering 33 goals in League One, has battled injuries and a lack of playing time.

Sunderland look set to miss out on Scott Twine

The ‘terrific’ 24-year-old is expected to leave Turf Moor, while the likes of Bristol City, Sunderland and Birmingham were interested in snapping him up.

However, Bristol Live have now reported that the Robins are ‘confident’ they can land him this summer.

Twine spent the second half of last season on loan at Ashton Gate, though missed out on a large chunk of his spell due to injury.

Despite that, Bristol City are eager to sign him again and are looking to conclude a deal for the midfielder soon.

The report claims that Twine has been using their High-Performance Centre during his off-season training, having grown up only 45-minutes away.

Twine was initially valued at £5 million in January, but Burnley’s relegation is likely to push his price tag down.

It’s unclear whether Sunderland will try to battle City for his signature, though they would probably struggle to wrap up such a deal without a manager anyway.

Managerless Black Cats will struggle to win this race

Twine, who is probably afraid of the team’s shocking collapse from the previous season, will seek assurances of consistent playing time and doesn’t want to be in a relegation struggle.

Despite some misfortune since joining Burnley, the offensive midfielder is obviously a very talented player.

Twine could have made an immediate impact on the Championship had he joined a side without such depth in their roster, even though he was only 21 years old when he was dominating League One.

He may be able to regain his form if he can have a successful run with a squad free of injuries.

The Black Cats can likely write off signing him when they don’t even have a manager, unless he is still at Burnley at the conclusion of the window.

If he’s keen to head back south too, they might find it difficult to compete with the Robins.
