Aston Villa and Chelsea “Agree to Sign” Ian Maatsen

According to Fabrizio Romano, Aston Villa and Chelsea left-back Ian Maatsen have reached an agreement on a £37.5 million transfer.

The 22-year-old Netherlands international is set to sign with Unai Emery’s team despite Borussia Dortmund showing a lot of interest. The two parties are currently in “direct discussion” regarding personal terms.

Romano claims that Villa has extended an offer to Maatsen, whose release clause recently expired, for a six-year contract; the Birmingham team will cover a small portion of the player’s £35 million release clause.

Romano recommends Dortmund made an attempt to get Maatsen this summer, but they never made a bid of around £35 million to Chelsea.

The Dutch defender was eager to stay at Dortmund; his father had previously disclosed that negotiations to keep Maatsen in Germany were ongoing. However, in the end, the Bundesliga team lacked the financial resources to pursue a transfer.

Maatsen was allegedly lured to Villa by the possibility of participating in the Champions League the following year, after the team earned a spot in the competition by placing fourth in the Premier League.
Maatsen and Villa in Direct Conversation

According to Romano’s Daily Briefing, Villa is currently trying to persuade Maatsen with regards to finances and Unai Emery’s suggestions for the Dutchman:

“Ian Maatsen almost feels like a ‘here we go’ to Aston Villa. I say virtually because there is a negotiation going on between the club and the player on personal conditions, and Maatsen and Villa are in direct communication.

Maatsen has been offered a six-year deal by Villa, and the team is trying to convince him of Unai Emery’s intentions for him, the project, and the financial parameters in order to achieve an agreement.

Meanwhile, Villa and Chelsea have already completed an agreement. Some of you have been wondering why the £37.5 million sum exceeds Maatsen’s £35 million release clause.

“First of all, that clause is no longer in effect because it has expired. Villa can spread out the payment over a number of years by paying a little bit extra, which improves the terms for them. It’s also crucial to note that Borussia Dortmund made a sincere attempt to get Maatsen on a permanent basis, but they never made a £35 million offer.

After going on loan from Chelsea in January, Maatsen made an impact in Dortmund, as he helped them go to their first Champions League final in eleven years.

Villa Has a Thing for Conor Gallagher

Conor Gallagher, a midfielder for Chelsea, is still a target for Aston Villa this summer. However, according to journalist Ben Jacobs, a deal is not yet finalized because the England international “doesn’t want to be distracted” by Euro 2024.

Gallagher is a major transfer target for Unai Emery, and Chelsea is apparently aiming to unload many homegrown players this summer, setting an asking price of £50 million for him, according to The Guardian. The Blues can make pure profit for the books if they are able to sell some of their academy grads.
