Weston McKennie’s contract with Aston Villa is hijacked by Tottenham, according to sources

According to sources who spoke to Football Insider, Tottenham has gone ahead of Aston Villa in the competition to acquire midfielder Weston McKennie.

The Juventus player was rumored to be on Villa’s radar as part of an intricate trade arrangement, but negotiations have since broken down, allowing other teams to make a move.

According to sources, Spurs took advantage of the West Midlands powerhouses’ decision by agreeing to pay McKennie, 25, a discounted price.

Negotiations have commenced with Juventus on a £15 million agreement to acquire the US international player this summer.

The Italian powerhouses’ contract with the midfielder is scheduled to end in June 2025.
Following an update on the talks with Aston Villa, Weston McKennie might move to Tottenham.

As part of a trade with colleague Samuel Iling-Junior that saw Douglas Luiz go with Juventus, McKennie had appeared certain to join Villa.

On June 12, Football Insider reported that the two teams were in advanced negotiations for the accord, which included a £20 million payment to Villa.

McKennie’s move to Villa Park is now uncertain, though, as it was disclosed by Football Insider on June 17 that negotiations had broken down between the sides.

After contacting Juventus to inquire about the American’s availability, Tottenham has already moved to sign him this summer.

In the 2022–2023 season, McKennie had a miserable loan stint in the Premier League with Leeds United, as he only managed one assist in 20 games.

However, the midfielder started 33 of his 38 games for Juventus last season after moving back to Italy in the summer, dishing out 10 assists in the process.

After finishing one spot behind Villa in fifth place during his debut season with Tottenham, Ange Postecoglou is seeking to make changes to his squad.

According to Football Insider, Spurs would consider bids for nine of their senior players this summer in an effort to clear some funds for possible new hires. The Australian manager may want to do this.

In other news, there are growing rumors that Tottenham intends to spend heavily on a “marquee” signing.
