Rangers could lose Connor Barron bargaining chip as Aberdeen activate release clause

Rangers could lose Connor Barron bargaining chip as Aberdeen activate release clause.

Rangers are closing close on a deal for Connor Barron, and Aberdeen fans are not happy. The Gers have reportedly won the race to sign the 21-year-old midfielder when his contract expires at Pittodrie.

Rangers reportedly signed Connor Barron and ex-Motherwell custodian Liam Kelly ahead of the new season.

The transaction with Aberdeen is complicated by a Connor Barron development fee that must be paid as part of the transfer process.

Rangers may have lost a valuable negotiation piece due to the need to reach an agreement on the payment.

Rangers lose Barron bargaining chip

According to the Daily Record, Aberdeen would get approximately £525k in development fees if Connor Barron relocated south of the border.

However, given the midfielder’s transfer to Rangers means he will remain in the country, the two teams must agree on a fee for the midfielder, or the decision will be made by an independent tribunal. Rangers no longer have a bargaining chip in Robby McCrorie, regardless of Aberdeen’s obstinacy.

The Dons are looking for a new custodian and have expressed interest in bringing McCrorie to Pittodrie. This summer, the Rangers academy custodian will depart the club.

His brother, Ross McCrorie, joined the Dons three years ago with success. According to the Daily Record, Aberdeen is now focusing on St Johnstone custodian Dimitar Mitov.

It is understood that the Dons have activated the Bulgarian’s six-figure release clause, with the stopper now leading the club’s shortlist to replace Kelle Roos.

Aberdeen turn goalkeeper attentions elsewhere

Rangers used Ross McCrorie as a bargaining chip to sign Scott Wright on a pre-contract basis. McCrorie, a Gers academy defender, was on loan at Pittodrie.

As Rangers planned to sign Wright in January 2021, McCrorie’s permanent transfer fee was decreased.

There will be no such scenario with brother Robby if Aberdeen’s new manager Jimmy Thelin completes a bid for Dimitar Mitov.

It means Rangers may have to negotiate an outright sum for Connor Barron, which could cause problems for the Ibrox board.

Failure to do so will result in the case going to tribunal, and it is unclear how much Rangers will have to pay Aberdeen for the player.
