Exclusive: Tottenham hijack Aston Villa swap deal, Spurs now in pole position

According to Football Insider, Tottenham has moved ahead of Aston Villa in the pursuit of midfielder Weston McKennie.

Villa were considered to be close to signing the Juventus player as part of a convoluted exchange deal, but talks have now halted, allowing other teams to step in.

According to sources, Spurs have hijacked the West Midlands giants’ plan by agreeing to a reduced sum for McKennie, 25.

Talks have begun with Juventus over a £15 million agreement to sign the USA international this summer.

The midfielder’s contract with the Italian giants will expire in June 2025.

McKennie was expected to join Villa as part of a trade deal with colleague Samuel Iling-Junior that would see Douglas Luiz go for Juventus.

On June 12, Football Insider reported that the two clubs were in advanced talks for a deal that included Villa earning £20 million.

On June 17, Football Insider reported that talks between the parties had halted, casting doubt on McKennie’s transfer to Villa Park.

Tottenham have now made their move to sign the American this summer, having opened conversations with Juventus regarding his availability.

McKennie previously had a dismal loan spell in the Premier League with Leeds United during the 2022-23 season, recording only one assist in 20 appearances.

However, after returning to Italy last summer, the midfielder started 33 of his 38 Juventus outings last season, assisting 10 times.
