Chelsea vengeance, jumping ship, big statement – Graham Potter’s Leicester City impact in focus

Graham Potter is the odds-on favourite to take over at Leicester City, and our writers have given their thoughts on how he might perform at the King Power Stadium.

Graham Potter has been the odds-on favourite to become Leicester City’s next manager for several days.

City fans have long admired the former Brighton and Chelsea manager, who is a strong possibility. There is a good chance he will be the next man in the dugout, with Carlos Corberan and Steve Cooper also being considered.

But how would the appointment be received? How would Potter do in the King Power Stadium? To respond, LeicestershireLive’s City journalists weighed in on the pros and cons of his probable visit.

When Enzo Maresca originally moved to Chelsea, the first name that came to mind as a replacement was Potter. He appears to be the ideal fit, especially given that he is now without a club.

City has previously been associated with the former Brighton manager, who has long been admired by the club’s hierarchy. I did, however, believe that a move for him this summer would be ambitious, considering the other roles he is alleged to have passed down and those that are currently available.

If City can complete the deal for Potter, I believe it will be a major coup. He has Premier League experience with Brighton, having played an important role in their recent growth, and has been complimented for the game he has helped them play.

Maresca completely altered the club’s style of play, and the club requires someone who will continue with that concept. While each manager will have their own flair, changing the way the club plays would be counterproductive as City seeks to guarantee survival.

His experience at Chelsea may possibly contribute to his resolve to show himself in the Premier League again. Leicester could be the best place to do so.

The previous two times Leicester was looking for a new manager, Potter was my first choice (behind Brendan Rodgers and Dean Smith). This time is no different. There’s plenty of cause to be enthusiastic about his potential hiring, with his attractive football style and previous experience with Brighton saying volumes.

However, even if he would be free, I am concerned about his dedication to the club. It has been stated that he is undecided about the role and is holding out for the England job after the Euros. If Leicester sign their guy and he arrives, how long will it be before another club comes calling and he leaves?

Premier League experience is essential for Leicester, and the club will be seeking for players with a similar flair to those who adorned LE2 last season. Potter has each of those criteria and would come with plenty to show after failing at Chelsea. A move makes sense for all parties, and the timing seems good for him to return to club football.

Potter has been linked to important posts at Manchester United, but has previously turned down City. With the club’s current situation and likely points deduction, appointing him would be a big statement. Even before considering the managerial talents he would bring to the club, Potter’s appointment as manager would energise both the fan base and the team.

And after the initial enthusiasm wears off, City will still have an outstanding manager, one who, significantly, provides continuity from the squad’s performance last season under Maresca. The city does not need to rip up the blueprint.

Potter has demonstrated throughout his career that he gets his sides to play high-quality possession football that generates a lot of opportunities. That was especially true at Brighton, where they could have done much better than 15th, 16th, and ninth if they had finished further up the table.

He’s also not tied to a single formation, preferring varied shapes at Ostersund, Swansea, Brighton, and Chelsea, indicating a degree of mobility. He also has experience winning relegation battles, having done it in his first two seasons at Amex.

It’s difficult to imagine of a better appointment for City given their current situation. There are few noticeable drawbacks. Potter’s departure would leave City looking for a new manager after three seasons. Corberan, an up-and-coming manager making their Premier League debut, could bring a ‘us against the world’ attitude that could help City avoid relegation. However, they are minor quibbles that do not detract from Potter’s potential as an excellent appointment.
