Newcastle United set for PSR boost as Tottenham Hotspur ‘agree terms’ with £65m striker

Former Newcastle United striker Ivan Toney could be on the move from Brentford this summer.

Leading Premier League clubs have expressed significant interest in signing the 28-year-old striker. Toney, who joined Brentford from Peterborough United in 2020, has scored 72 goals in 141 games. He is currently away with England at Euro 2024.

Toney is apparently the target of Tottenham Hotspur, who have reportedly made a formal request to sign the Brentford striker. Spurs and the player have reached personal terms, but Brentford has rejected Spurs’ £40 million offer in favor of their £65 million demand, according to Football Transfers.

It is anticipated that Toney will be moving this summer, as Manchester United, Arsenal, and Chelsea are among the teams rumored to be interested. Although their interest has since waned, Toney’s previous team, Newcastle, was also previously mentioned as a potential suitor for the player.

If Toney is sold this summer, Newcastle might still profit a little bit. According to a prior report from Sky Sports, Newcastle would get 9% of Toney’s transfer cost as part of a sell-on deal with Peterborough.
Based on that, Newcastle would profit £5.85 million from the sale of Toney if it were to go for £65 million.

Darragh MacAnthony, the chairman of Peterborough, has refuted those numbers, calling them “complete misinformation.” Newcastle is said to be entitled to an additional sell-on percentage should Toney be sold again. Newcastle has already profited about £3 million from Peterborough’s £10 million sale of the player to Brentford.

For Newcastle, any sale would be a modest but welcome boost as they strive to comply with Premier League sustainability and profitability regulations.

Just four games were played by Toney for Newcastle in the 2015–16 campaign. After several loan stints, he finally moved to Peterborough for £1 million in 2018.
