Newcastle United have been proven right as Man United encounter £70m problem

Newcastle United are looking for another centre-back after signing Lloyd Kelly.

Lloyd Kelly will give coverage on the left, but Newcastle United must make significant investments on the right.

The Magpies are seeking to acquire a right-sided centre-back this summer, and it’s likely that whoever comes in will be Fabian Schar’s long-term replacement.

While Schar is going nowhere, it becomes logical to look ahead and see who will be Sven Botman’s partner in the next years. Schar may believe it’s him, but he’s 32 years old.He will be replaced within the next year or so, but who will fill the void remains unknown.

It will not be Tosin Adarabioyo, who chose Chelsea over Newcastle despite the Magpies’ confidence that he would sign with them.

It will most likely not be Jarrad Branthwaite, from whom Toon officials distanced themselves last month. Given what is currently going on at Manchester United, this appears to have been the correct move.

Newcastle United watch on as Manchester United struggle to sign Jarrad Branthwaite

Newcastle were interested in Everton defender Branthwaite, but took a backseat when talks with Kelly and Tosin were going well.

Although Tosin is no longer with Newcastle, there are no rumours about the Magpies reigniting their pursuit of the Everton defender.

Manchester United is currently attempting to bring Branthwaite to Old Trafford, but are struggling to meet Everton’s financial demands.

Just like their pursuit of Dan Ashworth, the Red Devils’ offer is well below the asking price.

Newcastle right to take their centre-back business elsewhere

And for £70 million, Newcastle is right to go elsewhere. While the 21-year-old is exceptionally good, he cannot be worth that much. For the record, that would have made him the Magpies’ most expensive signing ever.

Eddie Howe will hunt elsewhere for a centre-back. Marc Guehi has been linked with a move, which would be a far more interesting addition. However, he is unlikely to arrive, as Crystal Palace are likely to want a large fee for a player who impressed for England against Serbia on Sunday.

The ‘English tax’ is definitely real, and should drive Newcastle to look elsewhere.

There is better value elsewhere, and that is where the club should look when it comes to finding a new centre-back. That will most likely happen later in the window, with a new right winger taking the stage after the James Trafford trade is finalised.
