Everton holds talks with reps of World Cup-winning free agent – report

Everton are in talks with Mats Hummels’ representation to sign him on a free transfer this summer, according to HITC.

The news agency reported on their website (17 June) that the player’s representation had offered the World Cup winner’s services when he left Borussia Dortmund at the end of his contract.

Hummels is interested in moving to the Premier League, and several clubs in the division, including the Toffees, have been approached about a possible move, and they are currently contemplating whether to make a bid or not.

Everton to sign Mats Hummels on free transfer?

Everton is facing financial troubles, but Dan Friedkin is expected to take over ownership from Farhad Moshiri.

Aside from that, free transfers are always an excellent method for the club to bolster their squad, as they did with Ashley Young last summer, who brought experience and talent to the team.

Hummels would arrive with a tremendous pedigree and still in his prime, having been a major member of the Dortmund team that reached the Champions League final just last month.

However, at 35 years old, he is past his prime, and with Sean Dyche’s favourite James Tarkowski and Jarrad Branthwaite, whom the club is anxious to maintain, it would be a weird move.

If Branthwaite leaves for the big fee the club expects to earn, it may be wise to bring Hummels in as a short-term substitute, but the deal will be difficult to complete and appears unlikely to materialise.
