Erik ten Hag’s dig as legend backs Jarrad Branthwaite deal

Erik ten Hag’s critique of Gareth Southgate’s tactics during England’s 1-0 triumph over Serbia in Gelsenkirchen has dominated the Manchester United discussion on television.

However, rumours over United’s interest in signing centre back Jarrad Branthwaite continues.

Everton’s uncertain circumstances off the pitch may force them to part with one of their finest assets, and Branthwaite clearly has a high ceiling.

Here are the top headlines from Old Trafford over the last 24 hours, as the transfer market continues to revolve slowly in the background throughout the European Championship.

Ten Hag’s Southgate dig

Manchester United’s head coach criticised Gareth Southgate’s strategy after England’s 1-0 win against Serbia on Sunday, despite the fact that it was similar to the club’s under the Dutchman.

England began their Euro 2024 campaign with a 1-0 win in Gelsenkirchen thanks to Jude Bellingham’s 13th-minute header.

Southgate’s team dominated possession but struggled to create opportunities, with captain Harry Kane only touching the ball once during the first 45 minutes. Ten Hag was less than impressed with their performance.
“It’s the vision of the manager [Southgate],” Ten Hag told NOS. “England will take a 1-0 lead, then he [Southgate] decides to start gambling with making his team compact and relying on moments for the remaining minutes of the game.”

United legend bigs up Branthwaite

Ruud van Nistelrooy, a legendary striker, expressed admiration for Jarrad Branthwaite, a transfer target.

Branthwaite, a 21-year-old Everton defender, was managed by the former United great while on loan at PSV Eindhoven in the 2022-23 season. Branthwaite, who previously played in the Netherlands, has emerged as a promising young defender in the Premier League.

Everton has rejected a bid from Manchester United, despite reports that he had ‘signed terms’ with the club.

The defender’s outstanding season earned him a place in Gareth Southgate’s initial 33-man squad for Euro 2024. However, he did not make the final 26 that went to Germany.

Van Nistelrooy added: “He is a fantastic talent. The youngster is still young, but he has a future. He has good ball control and can play on the left or right side of centre-back due to his two-footedness. He possesses both height and quickness, which makes him quite complete.”

Benjamin Sesko

Sesko rejection understandable

Gary Neville understands Benjamin Sesko’s decision to stay at RB Leipzig despite a Premier League offer.

Manchester United and Arsenal have reportedly expressed interest in Sesko, who formerly played in Austria. Leipzig has confirmed that the 21-year-old will continue with the club for another year after signing a new contract.

“[He’s] got] goals, youth and physically,” Neville stated on ITV. “I believe we are returning to having a big physical striker up front; the game appears to have flipped a little bit with big defenders and big strikers.”

“He has great potential, which is why Premier League clubs are interested.” But I can also understand why, as mentioned, he is staying in Leipzig for another year.
