“Nearly completed”: following negotiations, is Newcastle about to sign a third summer player?

Ben Jacobs reports that Newcastle United is almost certain to sign Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford.

The journalist said that a deal is “getting quite close to being done” on a podcast over the weekend.

The club is looking to sign a young goalie to battle alongside Nick Pope in the upcoming campaign.

It was revealed over the weekend that we had made a £16 million bid for Trafford. That was rejected, but negotiations have gone on, and it appears that an agreement to bring the England talent to Tyneside is getting closer.

“My understanding is that James Trafford’s transfer to Newcastle is almost finished,” Jacobs stated. Burnley is requesting a £20 million payment.

If Trafford shows up, he will become our third summer acquisition, after Lloyd Kelly arrived on a free transfer and our commitment to purchase Lewis Hall for £28 million was activated.

Giorgi Mamardashvili of Valencia and Aaron Ramsdale of Arsenal had been strongly linked to the club.

However, Trafford is younger, will probably cost half as much, and may be a better long-term option to learn from Pope before he eventually takes over as No. 1, so as we continue to protect our future, a deal for the 21-year-old could make sense.
