‘Made contact’ Leeds transfer talks plus Sunderland’s league rivals set to appoint Newcastle coach

News and rumors about the championship as Sunderland and their league rivals try to go stronger.

While the Black Cats and their Championship opponents will be eager to bolster their playing squads now that the transfer season has reopened, Sunderland is still looking for a new head coach.

Here are a few of the most recent rumors and news from the second tier.

Leeds guy draws interest from Premier League

Championship teams may have to sell some of their best players this summer as they try to bolster their rosters.

Journalist Fabricio Romano claims that Brighton has “made contact” with Leeds in order to begin discussions on Crysencio Summerville’s possible signing.

Including play-off games, the 22-year-old winger scored 20 Championship goals in the 2023–2024 campaign. It’s also reported that Chelsea and Liverpool are keeping an eye on the Dutchman’s circumstances.

Middlesbrough wants to hire a coach from Newcastle.

In other news, Graeme, the brother of Michael Carrick, is expected to join Middlesbrough’s coaching staff after gaining access to speak with the under-18s coach of the Magpies.

Aaron Danks, the first team coach for Boro, is set to leave the team as he is being pursued by Bayern Munich to become a member of Vincent Kompany’s coaching staff at the Allianz Arena. Additionally, it has been stated that Bayern intend to elevate under-19s coach Rene Maric—who is reportedly being considered for Sunderland’s head coaching job—to the rank of assistant coach within Kompany’s backroom staff.

To replace Danks at the Riverside, Middlesbrough will now look to Graeme Carrick, per Teesside Live. Carrick worked with the FA in England’s junior structure before taking over as manager of Newcastle’s under-18 team in August 2022.

Blackburn’s most recent contract

In addition, a number of teams are attempting to reach new agreements with players whose contracts are about to expire this summer.

After “agreeing a deal in principle over a new contract,” Blackburn is hoping that 37-year-old defender Kyle McFadzean will remain with the team, according to the Lancashire Telegraph.

Following his short-term signing in January, Rovers are now in negotiations with former Sheffield United midfielder John Fleck regarding a new contract. Fleck is 32 years old. Due to a shin injury, Fleck only made one appearance for Blackburn in the 2023–2024 season. However, he is expected to rejoin Rovers for preseason training in an attempt to secure a new contract.
