Following an update on Douglas Luiz, Unai Emery will add Matteo Guendouzi to the Aston Villa squad.

Alan Hutton reports that Matteo Guendouzi will be added to Aston Villa’s roster by manager Unai Emery during the summer transfer window.

As Emery prepares to assemble his team for the upcoming campaign, reports have indicated that the Villans have begun initial negotiations to bring the former Arsenal midfielder to Villa Park during the summer transfer window [Football Insider, June 12].

Villa is expected to face a significant blow early in the transfer season as Douglas Luiz is reportedly nearing a transfer to Juventus, which will result in the departure of Weston McKennie and Samuel Iling-Junior [Fabrizio Romano, 11 June].

Hutton acknowledges that Guendouzi might be useful to Emery’s team as they attempt to make their way through the Champions League the following season, even though he doesn’t think the Brazilian can take over the role right away.

“I’m not sure if he would be the ideal substitute,” Hutton revealed to Villa News in an exclusive interview.

He’s a talented player, but he can also be a bit of a hot head. I’m not sure if he’s calmed down since his last trip to England.

I don’t think he’s going to come in and do everything Douglas Luiz has done, but I can’t sit here and say I watch him every week. I know he’s a decent enough player.

“But once more, it’s okay if you want to strengthen your team since you will need it during a demanding season, particularly with European football.

“However, I’m not confident that he will step in and take Douglas Luiz’s place.”
Will Douglas Luiz sign a summer transfer with Juventus, leaving Aston Villa and Villa Park?

It was always going to be difficult for Villa to find a summer replacement for Luiz.

Few players in the Premier League have been as successful as the Brazilian in recent years, so finding a replacement will cost a hefty penny.

Although Guendouzi is far from ideal, he does have elite experience in several different nations. The 25-year-old might prove to be a wise investment, even if his contract only calls for him to play one game every three to give Youri Tielemans a break.

Under Emery, the French international has played some of his greatest football. Perhaps if he moves to Villa Park, he’ll be able to reclaim the skill that made him such a threat when he was at Arsenal.

The decision on whether to proceed with this move will probably be made in the upcoming weeks.

In other Aston Villa news, Emi Martinez’s position on leaving in the summer has come to light after a sizable bid was suggested at Villa Park.
