England star Ollie Watkins reveals why he has therapy before and after Aston Villa games

Ollie Watkins regularly sees a therapist to keep him focused on scoring goals for Aston Villa.

Ollie Watkins has disclosed that he consults a life coach before and after Aston Villa games to relieve any stress.

The striker believes that frequent therapy has played a significant influence in his impressive form over the last 20 months. He scored 19 top-flight goals last season, tying the Premier League record for any Villa player, to help the team reach the Champions League.

Watkins told the High Performance Podcast: “I make sure I get everything off my chest before the game. I chat with a life coach. He’s been a great assistance to me since I started working with him. If there’s anything I need to get off my chest before heading to the game, I’ll be able to focus on that and put it aside.

“All I wanted to do was give it my all and be the best version of myself that day. I believe it’s the best investment I’ve ever made; investing in myself and my thinking has helped me become a better athlete.

“Whether I haven’t scored or if I’ve scored three goals, I’ll still speak with him. I still chat with him before and after games to ensure that I have covered everything and can go on to the next game. And since he came in, it’s really benefited me.”

Watkins continued: “Sometimes I simply need to call him for a talk, to check in, and to pick his brain on topics. I never want to reach out just because I need anything. He’s really blunt. I remember scoring a hat-trick after Brighton, and he said, ‘Well done, but it doesn’t mean anything’.

“And he’s correct. It doesn’t since I still have the next game to perform in. You must move on to the next. But I’ve also had horrible games, which doesn’t signify anything.

He responds, ‘You’ve got the next game to fix it. “I believe the mind is probably the most powerful thing. People work out in the gym every day, but changing your thinking takes time.

“Belief was one thing that may have held me back. You must have a certain amount of hubris and the conviction that no one can stop you.

“I believe that the most significant factor is one’s thinking. Your brain can tell you a lot of information. You may deceive your brain into believing many things.

It did have an impact on my performance, but I believe it helped me get to where I am. I put pressure on myself, but not to the extent that I used to.”
