There won’t be many Everton tales to follow in Germany this summer with Jordan Pickford and Amadou Onana the only Toffees represented at the European Championship.
Roberto Martinez and Ronald Koeman, two former managers, will lead Portugal and the Netherlands, respectively. However, fans won’t want to focus on the past for too long, with the possible exception of the latter’s first season.
However, looking ahead, there might be some interest. Everywhere, supporters will be watching games in search of players who could have a transfer influence on their team; Everton may have one in the first encounter.
In the opening match of the campaign, Scotland will play Germany. As much as Sean Dyche would love to work out a deal for Florian Wirtz, who is rumored to be available for a pitiful £112 million, or Jamal Musiala, the Scotland team under Steve Clarke is where a potential possibility is found.
Che Adams, whose middle name is Everton, was selected by the Scots following a stellar season in which he scored 16 goals in 40 games for Southampton during their successful promotion campaign.
It was a year that coincided with transfer rumors after Saints’ relegation as well.
Everton showed a keen interest in Adams, as the ECHO revealed last summer. A forward who could ‘bridge the gap between the youth of Youssef Chermiti and the quality of Dominic Calvert-Lewin’ was reportedly being sought for by the Blues.
Everton had been eyeing Adams for some time, but they decided to sign Beto from Udinese when their £12 million deal was rejected. Despite the fact that the Portuguese player may ultimately cost around £25 million, Everton paid nothing up front for him last summer.
The fact that Adams still had one year left on his deal was another alluring feature. He hasn’t yet reached a new contract agreement with Saints, so by the time the competition concludes in Germany, he will be a free agent. Financially, he would be perfect for the desperately needed Blues.
Although Everton was first in line for him a year ago, there seem to be more competitive suitors this summer season. According to BBC Sport, clubs from Saudi Arabia, Italy, and the United States are interested in the 27-year-old, as are Wolverhampton Wanderers and Nottingham Forest.
Everton does have three center-forwards available with the addition of Beto in the summer. But Calvert-Lewin’s future is uncertain. He is still Everton’s most reliable and productive striker.
The ECHO is aware that the team has extended an offer to Calvert-Lewin for a new contract, but he just has one year remaining and Newcastle United is showing a lot of interest in signing him.
There would be a big hole to fill if he decided not to sign a new deal and move on. Adams might then be a very alluring option, even though he might not be as good as Calvert-Lewin in terms of cost, experience, and stylistic fit for Sean Dyche’s football philosophy.
Adams has a lot of power as a free agent, and larger teams will be interested in bringing in a reliable option at a low cost if he has a good performance at the Euros this summer. There won’t be many more opportunities for him to display himself in the store window than Friday night, when everyone will be watching.
In terms of strikers, Everton might be well-positioned for another year if they manage to secure what they want and Calvert-Lewin extends his contract. Beto, who was lackluster in the previous season, could improve after a year to adjust, and Chermiti displayed promising moments in late-season cameos.
If Calvert-Lewin declines an extension, however, things might very well change very rapidly. If he does, the team might consider revisiting a long-term goal that is free.
