Aston Villa overtake Tottenham in race for 162-goal striker, with transfer ‘close’ to completion

According to sources, Aston Villa have surpassed Tottenham Hotspur as the best team to bring Tammy Abraham back to the Premier League, while Chelsea is in talks to sign Jhon Duran.

In January 2023, Aston Villa paid £18 million to sign Duran from Chicago Fire. The Colombian, who is only 20 years old, was considered as a long-term project at Villa Park, but after eight goals in 49 appearances, he could go soon.

Despite Duran’s lack of top-level experience, insiders have confirmed to TEAMtalk that Chelsea are close to signing him for £40 million. Enzo Maresca’s team has also concluded personal arrangements with Duran.

Villa will have to look for a new centre-forward to compete with and cover for Ollie Watkins after his departure.

On June 6, TEAMtalk exclusively disclosed that Abraham, the former Chelsea ace, will be placed up for sale by Roma this summer. He hopes to return to England.

Tottenham and West Ham United were among the first teams to be connected with him. Villa has since joined the search for Abraham, however.

According to the most recent sources in Italy, Unai Emery’s team has moved into pole position for the Englishman.

Villa’s football operations president, Monchi, plans to utilise the proceeds from Duran’s sale to sign Abraham and launch a “assault.”

Aston Villa transfers: Tammy Abraham could return

The 26-year-old, who has 162 club goals in 385 matches, is ‘near’ to returning to the Premier League, with Villa Park showing the ‘hottest’ interest.

If Monchi is able to reach an agreement with Roma, personal terms with the player should be finalised quickly.

Abraham had ‘wonderful memories’ of his loan stay at Villa in the 2018-19 season, when he scored 26 goals in 40 appearances to help the West Midlands club win promotion via the play-offs.

Signing Abraham would provide Emery with two excellent options up front, as he already has Watkins. However, it remains to be seen whether Abraham would be willing to serve as a backup.

After all, Watkins had a wonderful season in 2023-24, finishing with 27 goals in 53 games.
